Position Summary
The Auto Tech Instructor provides hands-on training and classroom instruction in automotive technology to Job Corps students, preparing them for industry-recognized certifications and successful careers in the automotive field. This role combines technical expertise with mentorship, ensuring students gain the knowledge, discipline, and employability skills needed to thrive in the workforce. As part of the mission-driven Job Corps program, the instructor plays a vital role in transforming lives through education, training, and personal growth.
Key Responsibilities
Instructional DutiesDeliver engaging instruction in automotive systems, including engine repair, brakes, suspension, steering, electrical systems, transmissions, and preventative maintenance
Provide hands-on shop training using industry-standard tools, diagnostic equipment, and safety practices
Develop and maintain lesson plans, training materials, and assessments aligned with ASE/NATEF standards and Job Corps requirements
Prepare students for ASE entry-level certifications and other industry-recognized credentials
Integrate Career Success Standards into daily instruction, reinforcing employability, professionalism, and workplace readiness
Student Development & MentorshipServe as a mentor and role model, promoting positive behaviors, accountability, and teamwork
Monitor and evaluate student progress, providing feedback, tutoring, and individualized support
Encourage students to set career goals and prepare for apprenticeships, advanced training, or direct employment
Support students in developing soft skills such as communication, time management, and problem-solving
Program & ComplianceEnsure compliance with the Job Corps Policy and Requirements Handbook (PRH) and safety standards
Maintain accurate student records, attendance, and progress reports
Collaborate with other instructors, counselors, and staff to provide a holistic approach to student success
Maintain accountability of tools, equipment, and shop safety protocols
Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED required; Associate degree or higher in Automotive Technology preferred
ASE Certification (or ability to obtain within a specified timeframe) required
Minimum 3-5 years of professional automotive repair experience
Teaching or training experience preferred, especially with at-risk youth or young adults
Strong communication, leadership, and mentoring skills
* Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record
