Description of Job

The Campus Engineer / Energy Manager position is a full-time position working in and reporting to the Facilities Management Department and working in partnership with the Auraria Sustainable Campus Program (ASCP).

The Campus Engineer / Energy Manager will identify and coordinate Energy Management activities for the Auraria Higher Education Center including evaluating and improving energy efficiency, working with the Facilities Trades Departments (HVAC, Electrical and Plumbing), AHEC Projects, and contractors to develop best practices for all utility usage and conservation. This position will be responsible for ongoing audits of buildings and utility usage to identify areas for improvement, track, and manage energy data using the EnergyCap software program. This individual will also work with Construction Project Managers and the ASCP to identify projects that will have a significant return on investment and positive environmental impact, and collaborate with contracted project engineers to ensure that best practices are being applied to new projects and remodels. This position will also work with ASCP to expand its ability to properly address our mission to reduce the AHEC campus\' greenhouse gas emissions.

PROJECT EVALUATION FOR SYSTEM DESIGN AND PRODUCT SELECTION TO ENSURE MAINTAINABILITY AND EFFICIENT CAMPUS OPERATION

  • Serve as the primary contact to Project Management on all energy and utility-related projects, including projects that are funded through the ASCP.
  • Propose Capital Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing projects related to campus utility and energy use and work closely with AHEC Facilities Services Project Management Team during the design, construction, and commissioning of projects, ensuring sustainable building practices are carried throughout design and construction.
  • Monitor the effectiveness of energy efficiency/renewable energy projects on campus and report progress when requested.
  • Research, present, and utilize utility, local, state, and federal rebate and incentive programs to assist with the implementation of energy efficiency initiatives.
  • Regularly coordinate efforts with the AHEC Facilities Management team to ensure the feasibility of project implementation.
DEVELOPMENT AND EXECUTION OF ENERGY PLAN AND STRATEGIES
  • Monitor and improve the energy efficiency of all Auraria Higher Education Center facilities and school-owned buildings identifying conservation measures to pursue.
  • Develop and implement utility management strategies and measures related to building heating/cooling, electrical usage, efficient irrigation practices and water conservation.
  • Audit existing facilities to identify energy savings opportunities.
  • Develop long and short-term energy management goals and objectives for the campus.
  • Identify energy-related issues quickly and dispatch staff to address these issues to prevent wasted resources.
  • Support the development of, monitor campus utility budgets.
  • Track and maintain energy consumption records (currently using EnergyCap Database).
  • Performs monthly meter reading with support of AHEC trades.
  • Oversees and reviews monthly utility billings to AHEC departments, Institutional partners, and other tenants; evaluate existing campus metering opportunities and propose enhancements.
  • Negotiate the purchase of utilities where possible, including electricity, natural gas, water.
  • Develop a comprehensive Energy Management Plan in collaboration with AHEC Facilities and ASCP team members which will identify how the Auraria Campus can reduce energy use, save money, and reach its Greenhouse gas reduction goals among other energy use targets.
  • Identify projects that will provide significant financial savings which can be applied to on-going energy savings projects.
  • Research best practices at peer and other Colorado institutions.
  • Initiate communication to campus on energy and cost savings plan and strategies to create buy-in and participation.
  • Prioritize no or low-cost solutions first with an emphasis on a short-term return on investment.
  • Research and apply for applicable grant programs.
INTERACTION WITH AHEC HVAC, ELECTRICAL AND PLUMBING TRADES
  • Partner with AHEC Trades to maximize operational efficiency and cost savings:
  • Plumbing: track and evaluate water usage to proactively address potential water leaks
  • HVAC: evaluate existing HVAC systems and Building Automation System (BAS) settings to improve occupant comfort and identify opportunities for repairs, operational improvements, and energy savings.
  • Electric: evaluate opportunities for savings including changing to LED fixtures, adding light harvesting, lighting controls.
OTHR ENGINEERING MANAGEMENT-RELATED DUTES
  • Support Environmental Health and Safety team efforts to address and manage storm water issues related to the AHEC campus including navigating the various compliance related requirements and organizations.
  • Learn and utility the campus Building Automation System to support the energy management tasks and goals.
  • Support the training and education of one (1) or more engineering interns or engineering students.
Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

Professional Requirements:

Education:
  • Bachelor\'s Degree in Engineering, Energy Management, or a closely related field.
Experience:
  • A minimum of four (4) years demonstrated experience integrating energy efficiency and renewable energy strategies into organizations/institutions and their operations.
  • This experience must clearly demonstrate the ability to identify and manage issues on campus.
  • Experience with an energy usage and cost software system (campus currently utilizes EnergyCap.).
  • Experience working with Building Automation Systems (campus currently uses Johnson Controls\' Metasys); pr building controls and familiarity with optimization strategies; proven expertise in organizing, analyzing, interpreting, and evaluating relevant data.
  • At least one (1) year of the required four years of energy management experience must be at an institution of higher education (public or private), public school education or other public entity. Demonstrated success managing energy efficiency or renewable energy projects. Experience in utility monitoring and greenhouse gas inventory reporting.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Those candidates with a CEM designation are strongly encouraged to apply or willing to obtain this certification within the first 6 months of employment. LEED Green Associate or AP credentials are also preferred. Familiarity with ASHRAE Standards and LEED rating system and reporting requirements.
Personal Characteristics:
  • The Campus Engineer / Energy Manager position requires experience in program administration and knowledge of a university/college community necessary to plan, manage, transform and optimize energy usage on campus. Excellent analytical, communication (both verbal and written) and organization skills; an ability to self-motivate, multi-task and to work in a fast-paced environment; to work under deadlines; and the ability to work closely with and persuade an energy conservation mindset in students, faculty and administrators from the 3 campus institutional partners and AHEC staff and management.
