GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Wyoming Attorney General\'s office seeks a qualified attorney interested in serving as an appellate attorney in the Criminal Division. This attorney will litigate appeals in front of the Wyoming Supreme Court and may litigate state post-conviction and federal habeas corpus challenges to convictions and sentences in the state and federal district courts. The position provides an immediate opportunity to litigate complex and difficult issues present in criminal law practice and provides for regular appearances for oral arguments in the Wyoming Supreme Court. This attorney may also assist in advising criminal justice agency clients and participate in civil litigation, administrative hearings, drafting opinions, and other duties as assigned.

This position provides an opportunity to develop and utilize legal writing and oral advocacy skills while handling interesting cases. This position may also develop civil litigation and client counseling skills. It allows for professional growth and a healthy work-life balance.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed at the job level.

• Conduct extensive legal research and thorough written legal analysis for submission to both trial and appellate courts, including appellate briefs, pleadings, motions, and presenting arguments in court.
• Represent the State in direct appeals stemming from felony convictions in all 23 counties.
• The ability to work collaboratively with others when providing legal advice to the various agencies for which the Criminal Division is responsible.
• Prepare formal and informal opinions, track legislation, and provide advice to prosecutors.
• Manage the discovery process, including litigating discovery disputes, conducting depositions, attending client meetings, appearing in court, and participating in litigation strategy development and implementation.

KNOWLEDGE:

• Those with experience and/or interest in criminal law are encouraged to apply.
• Knowledge of state and federal law, rules of evidence, criminal procedure rules, and appellate procedure rules.
• Experience in legal writing, preferably at the appellate level.

Education:
Juris doctorate

• This position is at-will and is appointed by and serves at the pleasure of the Attorney General (W.S. 9-1-608)
