JOB SUMMARY

John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital (JHSH) of Cook County is the flagship of Cook County Health (CCH). The Level 1 Trauma Center is one of the most respected in the nation. The hospital treats over 150,000 emergency room patients annually. It is home to more than 300 attending physicians along with more than 400 medical residents and fellows.

The Attending Physician XII will provide both clinical and surgical services to the patients of CCH and participate in the on-call schedule as specified by the Division Chief. This position will supervise Fellows, Residents, Medical Students, and Ancillary Personnel. Partakes in clinical trials, conducts research and serves on administrative committees. Will be expected to adhere to all federal, local and department rules and regulations while upholding the highest standards of professionalism, maintain fiduciary responsibility to CCH and perform all other related duties assigned by the Division or Department Chair.

Typical Duties

  • \xc2\xb7 Provides diagnostic and treatment services to patients including benign and malignant disease
  • \xc2\xb7 Works a minimum of four (4) clinical days per week and 2080 hours per year for CCH or equivalent as specified by the Division Chief and the Department Chair.
  • \xc2\xb7 Obtains and maintains surgical privileges and remains clinically active at John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital and/or Provident Hospital as assigned by the Division Chief and the Department Chair.
  • \xc2\xb7 Completes timely, accurate and thorough medical record documentation as required to meet appropriate department and/or hospital guidelines.
  • \xc2\xb7 Responds promptly to all on-call queries from fellows or residents; communicates with other Attending Physicians and Surgeons as needed.
  • \xc2\xb7 Communicates promptly to the Division Chair all information necessary for the creation of assignments.
  • \xc2\xb7 Assists in developing new programs and processes that enhance patient care.
  • \xc2\xb7 Performs research activities; follows all ethical guidelines as coordinated with and approved by the Division Chair and approved by the Institutional Review Board (IRB).
  • \xc2\xb7 Participates in ongoing clinical trials and investigations offered in the division; participates in
  • administrative committees servicing the department and Hospitals as schedule permits.
  • \xc2\xb7 Attends Division and Department meetings on a regular basis and the Morbidity and Mortality conference as required.
  • \xc2\xb7 Requests appropriate specialty consultations and performs inpatient rounds and required resident teaching sessions as assigned and as clinical needs dictate.
  • \xc2\xb7 Participates in on-call rotations as specified by the Division Chief.
  • \xc2\xb7 Participates in Quality Assurance activities as assigned.
  • \xc2\xb7 Participates in opportunities for research and obligations regarding its performance via individual arrangement with the Division Chief/Department Chair.
  • \xc2\xb7 Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • \xc2\xb7 Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathy Medicine (DO) from an accredited college or university
  • \xc2\xb7 Must possess a valid Illinois medical license or have the ability to obtain this license prior to the start of this employment
  • \xc2\xb7 Must possess Illinois and Federal Controlled Substance License or eligibility to obtain license prior to the starting employment
  • \xc2\xb7 Board certified in the relevant specialty of General Surgery or must be in a pathway leading to certification within five (5) years of terminal training
  • \xc2\xb7 Board certified in Surgical Critical Care or its equivalent or must be in a pathway leading to certification within five years of terminal training
  • \xc2\xb7 Recent (over the past two years) operative experience consisting of a minimum of 200 operative General Surgery cases
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics
  • \xc2\xb7 Current knowledge and skill in the application of the principles and methods of General Surgery to ensure quality and standards of care.
  • \xc2\xb7 Knowledge of the principles and practices of medical research to help implement clinical protocols/internal research.
  • \xc2\xb7 Knowledge of the principles and methods of training medical staff to ensure standards of care.
  • \xc2\xb7 Skill to analyze data/information accurately in order to determine and implement an effective and appropriate course of action.
  • \xc2\xb7 Skill to prepare written documents to provide information and/or direction to staff and others.
  • \xc2\xb7 Skill to communicate effectively in order to exchange and/or provide information and/or direction to staff and others.
  • \xc2\xb7 Demonstrate the ability to follow department specific work rules, hospital and personnel rules.
  • \xc2\xb7 Ability to meet requirements of on call schedule if requested to participate.
  • \xc2\xb7 Demonstrate attention to detail, accuracy and precision in decision making.
  • \xc2\xb7 Ability to adhere to department policies and standards utilizing best practices and the appropriate use of the electronic health record (EHR).
  • \xc2\xb7 Ability to maintain a professional demeanor and composure when challenged.
  • \xc2\xb7 Ability to follow hospital protocol when exposed to noise, chemicals, disease, blood borne pathogens, patient violence and procedural injuries.
  • \xc2\xb7 Ability to work flexible hours including weekends, evenings and holidays as needed.
  • \xc2\xb7 Must be able to travel to work sites throughout Cook County.
  • \xc2\xb7 Ability to meet department and divisional productivity thresholds.
  • \xc2\xb7 Ability to meet appropriate confidentiality standards for protected health information (PHI).
  • \xc2\xb7 Ability to provide appropriate patient care while maintaining fiduciary responsibility to Cook County.
