The College of Health Solutions (CHS) stands at the intersection of health research and technological advancement, with an emphasis on health systems, human performance, and precision health.. CHS Information Technology seeks an Assistant Director of Research Technology with a depth of technical knowledge combined with a creative mindset that can foster innovation and drive growth. This role would collaborate closely with Primary Investigators and other key stakeholders, guiding them in harnessing the latest technologies to amplify the impact of their research projects within our core focus areas.

The Assistant Director will assume supervisory responsibilities, mentoring and leading the Research Technology Core team in their professional growth. The Assistant Director will report to the Senior Director of CHS Information Technology, aiding with research technology operations and ensuring alignment with the broader IT and research goals of the college. Exceptional communication skills will be instrumental in connecting technical nuances with overarching research objectives, fostering a collaborative and dynamic research environment. The ideal candidate for the Assistant Director role combines hands-on experience with both a big-picture mindset and technological knowledge in order to provide research with the tools and support for success. Beyond the tech, the Assistant Director will dive deep into the regulatory landscape, ensuring the college\'s groundbreaking work is compliant and secure. Under direction of the Senior Director, the Assistant Director performs work of considerable difficulty in planning, developing, and managing operational functions of the Research Technology Core at the College of Health Solutions, including a supervisory role of the Research Technology Core staff, and manages resources of assigned areas to accomplish defined initiatives.

Working Environment

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse; required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor\'s degree in technology, business management, communications or related field and five years of experience leading technical teams, which include three years of supervisory/management experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

Desired Qualifications
  • Evidence of a Master\'s degree or higher in Information Technology, Computer Science, Health Informatics, or a related discipline.
  • Experience in guiding research projects, particularly in integrating technologies to align with research objectives.
  • Evidence of foundation in IT infrastructure design and management, with a track record of conceptualizing and implementing robust technological frameworks.
  • Experience in system administration, including maintenance, updates, and troubleshooting of varied research technology systems.
  • Experience in utilizing metrics for decision-making, performance optimization, and forecasting.
  • Demonstrated leadership roles with a focus on mentorship, team growth, and professional development.
  • Demonstrated knowledge with key institutional and regulatory standards such as IRB, HIPAA, 21 CFR Part 11, GLP, GCP, FERPA, etc.
  • Experience creating or overseeing data management plans that ensure compliance with these standards.
  • Proven track record of working with senior IT leadership, primary investigators, and cross-functional teams. Demonstration of exceptional communication skills, with the ability to bridge the gap between technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated commitment to staying updated with the latest trends in research technology, as well as an ability to adapt and evolve in rapidly changing technological environments.

Essential Duties
  • Works closely with Primary Investigators (PIs) and CHS Research Advancement to conduct needs and technology assessments for research projects, provide recommendations on the most appropriate technology solutions to meet project requirements and align with the college\'s goals. Engages and advises on technology budgets for proposals and awards. Resolves complex problems involving multiple constituents by embracing challenges, managing conflict, streamlining processes, and building relationships.
  • Supervises and manages Research Technology Core staff, providing leadership and support for their professional development. Mentors staff, fosters team participation, encourages team collaboration and communication, works as a part of the leadership team, and seeks continuous improvement in all aspects of team dynamics. Responsible for acquisition, interviewing and hiring of all new employees and contract personnel.
  • Liaisons with University IT teams to direct PIs and research teams to central resources (e.g., High Performance Computing, server infrastructure, etc.).
  • Works in tandem with the CHS Research Success Hub to develop initiatives related to research data (including clinical) use, retention, and accessibility.
  • Leads the development and implementation of data management plans to ensure the security and accessibility of research data.
  • Ensures that research technology adheres to institutional and regulatory compliance standards, such as IRB, HIPAA, 21 CFR Part 11, GLP, GCP, FERPA, etc.
  • Works closely with the Senior Director in evaluating the effectiveness of the Research Technology Core, producing detailed reports, special statistical reports, and surveys or analyses of a complex and difficult nature for executive leadership. Interprets various data, analyzes reports and recommends and/or initiates actions to be taken based on said metrics.
  • Develops and maintains a rich knowledge base of research technology solutions, best practices, and resources that can be leveraged to support the research projects of the college. Ensures this knowledge is accessible and routinely shared with executive leadership and the college community.
  • Provides hands-on technical consulting and support to researchers and faculty on complex research technology issues, mitigates and troubleshoots technical problems when necessary. This can include infrastructure management, cloud services, third-party software, etc.
  • Manages data security and privacy for research technology systems, including implementation of data encryption and access controls, and coordination with the University and Knowledge Enterprise Information Security Offices to remain updated and compliant.
  • Manages the pipeline of grant and award requests from the college community; facilitates collaborative discussions, distills requirements and prioritizes those requirements into actionable and strategic work.
  • Develops and maintains documentation related to research technology related to policies, procedures, and standards, and provides training and support to ensure adherence to such policies, procedures, and standards in said documents.
Salary Range

$79,950 - $95,000 per year; DOE
