Position Summary

Horizon is currently seeking a protein engineer to support pre-clinical program development in autoimmunity, inflammation, and rare diseases. This person will be responsible for leading protein engineering efforts for multiple large-molecule pre-clinical programs. This person will be expected to engage in the discovery and molecular engineering of biotherapeutics (antibodies, enzymes, fusion proteins etc.) as well as develop new processes and technologies for therapeutic discovery.

Responsibilities

  • The ideal candidate will have broad laboratory training background, a deep understanding of large-molecule therapeutic pre-clinical development, scientific curiosity and a positive approach to working in a team-based research environment along with a track record of creative problem-solving, taking on difficult research challenges and delivering results.
  • You will leverage your strong leadership skills to implement bold new ideas and manage stakeholders within and outside of Horizon\'s research team.
  • As an Associate Director within the protein engineering group, you will provide leadership, mentorship, training, and technical expertise to a multi-disciplinary group of scientists.
  • Innovate new methods, technologies, or make recommendations for onboarding existing ones, to continually improve the quality and speed of discovery of biologics for therapeutic applications
  • Analyze, interpret, document and present data to the scientific and leadership teams.
  • Work with stakeholders in various therapy areas to validate innovations by executing live discovery programs that show benefit to therapeutic discovery
  • Design and conduct experiments within the lab, as needed, to further support your team
  • Provide analysis, interpretation, troubleshooting and next steps on experimental workflows
  • Manage work via CROs or external stakeholders/partners/collaborators
Qualifications and Skills Required
  • Ph.D in a biological discipline focused on enzyme engineering, protein biochemistry, directed evolution, and protein design or a related field.
  • 8+ years of industry experience and deep expertise with antibody and/or enzyme engineering, computational design, enzyme evolution and molecular biology technologies, high throughput screening, display technologies. Post-doctoral work may serve as experience.
  • Proven track record of managing, executing, and delivering successful protein engineering projects in an industry environment.
  • Deep understanding of human immunology and the ability to communicate and work with disease area experts on advancing pre-clinical programs is required
  • Expertise in protein structure modeling and analysis (e.g. Schrodinger, MOE, pyMol, etc.) is desirable.
  • Experience with bispecific/multispecific antibody technology as well as design, expression, purification, and biochemical characterization of various antibody formats is highly desirable.
  • Experience with the following instruments or techniques is highly desirable: imaging/multicolor flow cytometry-based instruments, HTP-based binding assays (such as ELISA, SPR, BLI, MSD), cell-based assays (Intellicyt), affinity chromatography, ion-exchange chromatography.
  • Strong publication record
  • Outstanding communication and presentation skills
  • Excellent organizational and record keeping skills
  • People management/training experience is desirable
