These fourteen close-knit educational communities are each led by a Head and a Dean, who build relationships with and among the students. The residential college deans provide holistic advising and mentorship to the students, serving as their chief academic advisers, providing non-clinical counseling and support, and fostering close relationships over the students\xe2\x80\x99 time at Yale. These connections remain even for students who move off-campus, as students\xe2\x80\x99 affiliations remain.
The Associate Dean of Residential College Life plays a central role in fostering the excellence of residential college life, supporting the residential college deans and others in creating inclusive, engaged communities while also responding to the unique needs of individual students. Reporting to the Dean of Students, the Associate Dean of Residential College Life works to support and strengthen resources within the colleges, with a particular focus on student mental health, wellness, and belonging. The position is located within the Yale College Office of Student Affairs, enabling close coordination with colleagues overseeing campus-wide student life programs, including those in the Office of Student Engagement. Working with colleagues, the Associate Dean will track trends, identify best practices, and provide both vision and pragmatic proposals for ongoing improvements to the residential college experience.
More specifically, Associate Dean of Residential College Life responsibilities include: Support the residential college deans in managing a range of student life concerns; ensure that individualized responses are balanced across the fourteen colleges; escalate situations to the Dean of Students when necessary. Convene the Students of Concern committee, working with the Dean of Students and colleagues from multiple units to assess and respond to complex student situations; manage record-keeping and information flow; communicate the committee\xe2\x80\x99s recommendations to residential college deans and other relevant colleagues; track key statistics. Serve as the primary Yale College liaison to the new Yale Housing office, serving as dotted-line supervisor to the Associate Director of Undergraduate Housing. Working closely with the residential colleges and the housing office, negotiate policies and practices for smooth operations that meet both student and staff needs. Oversee the central aspects of the First-Year Counselor Program: budgeting; job description and contract; hiring timelines and best practices; spring and summer training; monthly meetings with the head FroCos; disciplinary action, when necessary. Serve on the Camp Yale Orientation Committee. Oversee the Old Campus Fellows program. Work closely with the Associate Dean of Student Affairs to maintain alignment between approaches to residential college life and to student life more broadly. Together, identify patterns and issues that may require new or transformed approaches. Work with the Dean of Students to develop visions and concrete proposals for such changes. With the Dean of Students and Associate Dean of Student Affairs, share 24/7 emergency management coverage during term-time. Supervise the Yale College Community Care (YC3) Director, aligning the YC3 clinical and wellness support within the residential colleges; ensure close collaboration between YC3 staff and residential college deans; identify student support needs and direct structural responses. Maintain documentation of student affairs policies and protocols for the residential college deans. Manage student affairs training of new residential college deans. Take on special projects and initiatives to support the Dean of Students; perform other duties as assigned. Essential Duties 1. Required Education and Experience Master\xe2\x80\x99s degree with a minimum of eight years of higher education experience working with students, faculty and university administration, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Required Skill/Ability 1: Work effectively with students, faculty, staff and University administration. Comfortable and capable of representing the Dean of Students and the College in multiple contexts, both orally and in writing. Demonstrated ability to handle stressful, challenging and emotionally-charged situations, create thoughtful, fair and institutionally-aligned responses. Required Skill/Ability 2: Demonstrated ability to engage in collaborative management of programs. Capacity to work well with ambiguity and to consider multiple perspectives. Capacity to provide direct supervision, as well as supportive professional mentorship, to a diverse group of colleagues and students. Required Skill/Ability 3: Demonstrated skill in generating and encouraging creative ideas, innovative thinking, and imaginative solutions to problems; willingness to seek out and utilize the views of others. Preferred Education, Experience and Skills: Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree. Clear evidence of the Experience in residential life and student support in a highly-selective, liberal arts environment. Experience within Yale\xe2\x80\x99s residential colleges or similar undergraduate educational communities. Experience in restorative justice or other alternative conflict resolution practices.
