Assistant/Associate/Full Professor at Indiana University

Located on the ancestral lands of the Miami, Delaware, Potawatomi, and Shawnee people, the College of Arts and Sciences at Indiana University (IU) Bloomington invites applications for tenure/tenure-track positions in Native American and Indigenous Studies to begin Fall 2023. We welcome applications from scholars trained in any of the disciplines in the arts, humanities, or social sciences whose work focuses on Native American or Indigenous communities in the US and beyond. This includes, but is not limited to, research on the politics, culture, environmental interactions, literature, languages/language revitalization, and/or history of American, Alaska Native, and Indigenous peoples globally. Each of the faculty hired under this initiative will have tenure homes in a department within the College of Arts and Sciences, and each will be expected to teach at least one course each year for the Native American and Indigenous Studies program. Candidates for assistant, associate, and full professor positions will be considered.

Indiana University boasts a wealth of resources to support scholarship in this area, including the American Indian Studies Research Institute, IU Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, William R. Adam Zooarchaeology Laboratory, and Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) Office.

Basic Qualifications

The successful candidate will demonstrate the potential to, or have already achieved, national or international recognition for their research, have a strong interest in graduate and undergraduate instruction including mentoring of graduate student research, and a commitment to program, department, college, and university service appropriate with rank. We are especially interested in candidates whose experience includes serving Native/Indigenous community research, teaching, and outreach interests and who are committed to serving such interests in Native/Indigenous communities as part of the duties of the position. Interested candidates at the associate or full professor level will be considered for the position of director for the American Indian Studies Research Institute.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. prior to employment. We ask that candidates submit: a cover letter detailing their research and teaching interests and addressing any experience with or connection to a Native/Indigenous community ; current CV; a 1-2 page statement addressing their contributions to diversity, equity, and inclusion through research, teaching, and/or service; evidence of teaching effectiveness; a writing sample; and contact information for three letters of reference.
