Job Description

Full-time tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor rank in the Modern Languages department beginning in fall 2026.





The Department of Modern Languages at SUNY Cortland invites applications for a tenure-track position in Spanish at the assistant professor level, beginning in fall 2026. Primary responsibilities include teaching undergraduate Spanish courses in contemporary Hispanic culture and Spanish language; maintaining an active scholarship/research agenda; advising students; providing scheduled office hours and support to students outside of the classroom; and engaging in service to the department, school, and university.

Salary Range: $62,500-$65,630

Major Responsibilities


The Modern Languages Department offers majors and minors in Spanish and Teaching English as a Second Language; degrees leading to New York State teaching certification in Adolescence Education Spanish and K-12 Teaching English as a Second Language; and an M.S. Ed. in Teaching English as a Second Language. In addition, the Modern Languages Department offers lower division courses in American Sign Language, French, Italian, and Spanish, as many majors at SUNY Cortland require coursework in a language other than English. The teaching load for this position is 3/3 and includes lower division language courses, upper division courses in advanced Spanish conversation, grammar, and composition, and upper division courses of the assistant professor's design in 21st century Hispanic culture with a primary focus outside of literature. Classes are taught in person in Spanish.



Responsibilities:


Teach a total of 18 credits per year (9 credits per semester); Develop an active scholarship or research agenda; Provide service to the department, school, and university; Provide scheduled office hours, act as academic advisor, and support students outside of the classroom by serving as advisor to student organizations, supervising student assistants, research assistants, or other internship experiences; Support the infusion of topics related to diversity, equity and inclusion in the departmental and/or college-wide curriculum; and Participate in mentoring process with assigned mentor to support professional development.


Functional and Supervisory Relationships


This position reports to the academic department chair and works closely with department faculty and other campus departments.



Required Qualifications


Ph.D. completed prior to the start of the appointment in Spanish with a specialization in 21st century Hispanic culture (non-literary focus). Demonstrated experience teaching Spanish language at the university level. Demonstrated experience in the use of technology in teaching and learning. Superior fluency in Spanish.



Preferred Qualifications


Evidence of an original and sustainable research agenda. Experience teaching Hispanic culture in Spanish at the university level. Evidence of commitment to undergraduate teaching. Demonstrated willingness and capability to create new courses in the area of contemporary Hispanic culture (non-literary focus). Evidence of willingness and ability to attract new majors and minors to the Spanish program.



Knowledge, Skills & Abilities


Ability to thoughtfully address the needs of a wide range of students with varying levels of experience with Spanish language and Hispanic culture, including beginning, heritage, and native speakers. Ability to manage course organization tools such as Brightspace, online meeting and collaboration tools such as Webex, Zoom, and/or Microsoft Teams, and online textbook and class materials platforms such as Vistas.
