The School of Education, Counseling, & Human Development (SECHD) is seeking a candidate for a full time, nine month, tenure track Assistant Professor position with a specialization in human development within context. We are looking for an innovative and impactful researcher in human development and family science and/or a focus in early childhood. SECHD is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to and/or coordinate course offerings that address the experiences within human developmental sciences (including child, adolescence, and adult development) in context, relationships across the lifespan, research methods, and prevention sciences and those who can contribute to SDSU\'s land-grant access mission. The expected start is August of 2024.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Potential to have an active and defined research program with potential for publication and extramural funding as well as actively seek external funding opportunities to support teaching and scholarship.
  • Support interdisciplinary undergraduate and graduate programs.
  • Teach high quality undergraduate/graduate courses in various formats (in-person, hybrid, asynchronous and synchronous online).
  • Potential to collaborate with Faculty, Staff and students from heterogeneous backgrounds in an effort to create an environment in which any individual or group feels welcomed, respected, supported, valued and able to fully participate as their authentic selves and communicate across differences.
  • Teach courses in child and human development, family relations, research methods among other courses based on need in the school and interest of the candidate.
  • Provide service to and with the program, school, college, and university committees and to the community with collaborations that include organizing families and parents, specialists, administrators, teachers, and other stakeholders to maximize the academic, emotional, and personal growth and safety of students.
  • Help prepare undergraduate and graduate students to be practitioners or further their education in the field.
  • Assist with recruitment efforts.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Earned doctoral degree (PhD or Ed.D) in the area of Human Development and Family Science, Developmental Psychology or related discipline by August 2024.
  • Knowledge of quantitative and/or qualitative research skills and potential for developing a productive and impactful research program.
  • Potential for publication and external funding of research interests.
  • Evidence of or potential for effective teaching.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and across disciplines.
  • Effective interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.

Department Description and Cultural Expectations

The School of Education, Counseling, & Human Development is home to the programs of exploratory studies, early childhood education, elementary education, secondary education (including agricultural education and family & consumer science education), human development and family studies, and counseling graduate programs (clinical mental health, college counseling, marriage & family, rehabilitation, and school counseling). The school is also host to minors in gerontology and rehabilitation services and home to the community services of the Child and Family Resource Network and Fishback Center for Early Childhood Education.

As the state\'s 1862 Morrill Act land-grant institution, the work of the university is carried out on its main residential campus in Brookings, at sites in Sioux Falls, Rapid City, Aberdeen, and through Extension offices and Agricultural Experiment Station research cites across South Dakota.

Brookings is a community of approximately 24,000 on the eastern border of South Dakota, 50 miles north of Sioux Falls and 200 miles west of Minneapolis. Brookings is listed as an ideal community for families, students, and retirees, and is rated among the safest and most vibrant cities in South Dakota.
