This position involves assisting with research projects, teaching, hosting visiting groups, and planning experiential learning events with internal and external partners.

This is a part-time (20 hrs/wk),

Defined Term position that will run through June 30, 2026. Work hours are flexible Mon - Fri between the hours of 7:30am - 4:00pm, with occasional weekend work or travel required. Work will be on campus and at the loko i?a, depending on projects.Our ideal candidate will have a bachelor's degree in environmental science, marine science, or Hawaiian studies, along with an understanding of Hawai?i's unique environments; '?ina-based educational experience is a plus!

Job Summary

Supports the implementation of ??ina-based educational practices by assisting team efforts related to research, teaching, and learning that contribute to the advancement of ??iwi Edge learning and teaching for E Ola!. Works closely with kumu (teachers), haum?na (students), and internal and external partners to apply research-based strategies and tools that promote haum?na-centered pathways for critical inquiry. Utilizes research techniques to participate in initiatives that inform and improve teaching practices and curriculum development by ensuring projects are well-documented, culturally aligned, and effectively shared with educational stakeholders.
Essential Responsibilities
Culturally Grounded Educational ResearchAssist with the development, preparation, and coordination of immersive research pathways that inform learning activities and pilots in classroom and community settings. Gather and organize input from stakeholders and partners to inform research projects and tool development. Perform data collection, coding, and monitoring tasks related to the design and testing of educational tools that are aligned with research insights. Participate in the documentation of project progress and learning into accessible formats for educators and partners.

Application of Research to Teaching & LearningMentor and support small groups and individual students in research techniques for projects that are aligned with community research goals. Assist with the design and implementation of research pathways for students. Support in adapting research insights into practical, culturally-aligned classroom tools, learning materials, and resources to promote haum?na-centered inquiry and critical thinking. Participate in reflective team conversations on curriculum development, teaching strategies, and educational outcomes.

Community & Team CollaborationCollaborate with a cross-functional team of educators, researchers, and cultural practitioners. Contribute to the planning and coordination of school, community, and ??ina-based learning events and activities. Help maintain respectful and responsive relationships with community partners and schools. Engage in ongoing learning about ??iwi Edge principles, Hawaiian ways of knowing, and educational research.

Position Requirements

Minimum Qualifications - An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of the above.Bachelor's degree in Education, Hawaiian Studies, Science, or a related field, or equivalent experience in community-based or school-based learning environments. Working knowledge of scientific or educational research processes, such as the scientific method, data collection, and reflection practices. Passion for ??ina-based education and a desire to contribute to culturally grounded, equity-centered learning. Experience doing purpose-driven work that supports the l?hui. Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to collaborate respectfully across diverse teams. Organizational skills and attention to detail in tracking work, documenting learning, and supporting shared goals. Comfort using digital tools for organizing and presenting information (e.g., Google Docs, Slides, Sheets).

Preferred QualificationsExperience supporting curriculum development, instructional design, or educational programming (paid or volunteer) Familiarity with Hawaiian language, culture, and values Exposure to or interest in ??iwi Edge learning, Hawaiian epistemology, or place-based education Experience working with haum?na, kumu, or community partners in an educational setting

Physical RequirementsFrequently sits, stands, walks. Regularly performs desk-based computer tasks and engages in light or fine manipulation. Regularly works outdoors, which may include exposure to weather conditions such as sun, wind, and rain. Occasionally required to lift and/or move objects weighing 10-20 pounds. May occasionally involve twisting, kneeling, crawling, climbing, or reaching during activities.

Working ConditionsWork is primarily conducted on campus or at other innovative educational settings; office work is also required. Typical work hours are Monday through Friday during normal business hours, with evening and weekend hours sometimes necessary to meet objectives and attend or conduct events. The role is dynamic and project-based, often requiring flexibility and adaptability to changing educational and community needs.
