This position assists the Parks Superintendent in the overall administration of the Park Maintenance Department. Management duties include promoting safety in the workplace; planning and coordinating work activities for the department in maintaining all city parks and related facilities such as pools, athletic complexes, athletic courts, athletic fields, assisting with park development and long-range planning activities; preparing comprehensive reports; and establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with the public, employees and other departments and agencies.


ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Supervises, trains and schedules employees, conducts performance evaluations and administers disciplinary action as needed.
  • Performs on-site inspections of all park facilities and Zoo.
  • Oversees personnel and contractors performing park development, construction, renovation, and landscape projects.
  • Oversee maintenance operations in the areas of Grounds/Public Buildings, Traffic Islands, and Urban Forestry.
  • Maintains and manages machinery and equipment inventories and regularly assesses the status of those assets, schedules maintenance and oversees the replacement and/or disposition of assets when appropriate.
  • Investigates and reviews accidents and injuries and conducts safety training/meetings as needed.
  • Maintains an inventory of trees.
  • Procures installs and maintains video security systems
  • Produces large format signs and other documents.
  • Establishes priorities for projects and allocates equipment and personnel accordingly.
  • Coordinates maintenance of recreational areas with Recreation Department.
  • Prepares specifications for park maintenance equipment and supplies.
  • Supervises and monitors the purchase of supplies, equipment, and materials and authorizes up to $1,000 in purchases without supervisor approval.
  • Supervises the preparation and administration of the park maintenance budget and makes recommendations on Capital Improvement plans and budgets.
  • Monitors and reviews all expenses and manages the budgets throughout the year.
  • Operates and supervises employees using or repairing heavy or complex machinery and provides training on the safe operation of the equipment.
  • Acts as Secretary for the Job Safety Observation team.
  • Performs impact attenuation of playground surfacing materials.
  • Aids in the planning, design, and inspection of new park facilities.
  • Assists with long range planning.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.



Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
  • Strong computer skills: Word, Excel, etc.
  • Ability to effectively deal with complaints from the public and demands from supervisors.
  • Ability and knowledge to operate various mowers, spray rig, pickup, tractor, front-end loader, utility cart with aerifier and top dresser, and other tools and equipment used by the parks or Zoo.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skill.
  • Ability to use computers for data entry and word processing.
  • Ability to use or repair small/light equipment, such as power tools.
  • Ability to use or repair medium equipment and machinery, such as vehicles or commercial mowers.
  • Ability to use or repair heavy or complex machinery, such as construction equipment.
  • Ability to supervise employees.



Licenses/Certification
Certified Playground Safety Inspector required. Certified Arborist, Landscape Professional and Park Administration certifications preferred.


Required Qualifications
Requires a High School Diploma or its equivalent and a minimum of five years of experience. Certified Playground Safety Inspector required. Valid Texas Driver\xe2\x80\x99s License required.
