General Summary of Position
Provides leadership to all unit based staff members. Maintains clinical expertise, ensuring the delivery of quality patient care and customer service excellence are maintained. Fosters staff\'s commitment to improving patient outcomes.

Minimum Qualifications
Education

  • Associate\'s degree in Nursing required
  • Bachelor\'s degree preferred
Experience
  • 2-3 years of nursing experience required
  • Charge nurse experience required
Licenses and Certifications
  • RN - Registered Nurse - State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure in Maryland required
  • BLS - Basic Life Support required
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and comprehend English
  • Basic Computer skills to perform data entry
  • Computerized clinical information systems: Clinicians View, ChartView, MAK, CareWare
  • HIPAA policies on Confidentiality
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Leadership: In collaboration with the Nursing Director, monitors and makes recommendations related to financial, human and material resources. Will assume 24 hour accountability as necessary. Maintains ongoing communication with staff to provide feedback, exchange information and discuss new developments. Demonstrates and fosters customer relation skills among staff, identifies individual staff development needs and provides appropriate resources to meet needs.
  • Department\'s goals, objectives, policies and procedures. In collaboration with the Nursing Director, interviews prospective employees. Assist in developing, planning and coordination of unit specific competencies for all personnel, supports the implementation of new programs, supports unit based initiatives and participates in unit based committees. Develops standards of performance, evaluates performance and conduct performance evaluations. Mentors and coaches individuals based on their strengths and developmental needs. Sets clear expectations for performance and holds Staff accountable.
  • Delegate\'s responsibility for problem solving and decision making to staff. Participates in multi-disciplinary quality, safety and service improvement teams. Serves on councils and committees and represents the department and hospital by serving as a representative on system and state initiatives.
  • Ensures compliance with governmental and accreditation regulations. Investigates and follows through on customer complaints, incident reports and communicates effectively to management. Rounds daily on patients in the department in an effort to support Customer satisfaction. Assist in the completion of call backs. Assist with and provides recommendations regarding the departmental operations/capital budget and ensures that the department operates within budget. Assists with payroll to include monitoring of time and attendance.
  • Assessment: Collects data in an ongoing and systematic manner, focusing on the biophysical, psycho social, cognitive, self-care, educational, environmental and discharge planning needs of the patient. Assesses the patient\'s health care needs on a systematic and continuous basis according to established time frames. I
  • dentifies the biophysical, psycho-social, cultural, self-care, teaching, and continuing care needs of the patient as appropriate to patient age and diagnoses.
  • Collects data in an ongoing and systematic manner as outlined by departmental protocol. Places the emphasis of assessment on the physiologic, psychological and cognitive status of the patient. Reports any abnormal assessments in a timely manner to physician/mid-level provider
  • . Delegates duties and tasks to others after assessment of patient needs and capabilities, and determines the scope of responsibilities with awareness of staff members performance standards. Supervises members of assigned team via regular rounds and verbal interaction to validate work load, patient status and problems.
  • Planning: Formulates a goal-directed plan of care, which is prioritized and based on identified patient care needs. Uses department/unit process standards as specified for planning/delivering patient care; individualizes these, holds self and co-workers accountable to them. Documents and evaluates care provided.
  • Demonstrates understanding of Advanced Directives. Participates in departmental/unit nursing performance improvement process; quality standards development, data collection, trending, revisions and education of staff. Initiates discharge planning with initial assessment. Utilizes effective communication skills to establish positive working relationship with all health team members, patients, and significant others.

  • Identifies/assesses an unstable or emergency condition and initiates appropriate action. Practices effective problem identification and resolution skills. Demonstrates appropriate delegation and coordination of tasks and duties
  • . Administers medications accurately and in accordance with the Five Rights of Medication Administration. Transcribes orders correctly. Performs treatments and procedures according to MGH standards. Assures documentation is accurate, concise and follows established guidelines. Demonstrates responsibility for Patient/Family education.
  • Evaluation: Assesses the effectiveness of intervention and revises the plan of care as needed. Evaluates effectiveness of patient interventions on an ongoing basis. Rounds on patients routinely to identify and assess needs. Reviews specific patient care situations for effectiveness of departmental team interventions. Demonstrates competence required in evaluation skills.
  • Development: Maintains current knowledge, certification, and licensure. Practices within legal boundaries of applicable scope of practice and according to hospital policy and procedures. Identifies learning needs in self and initiates actions to address these education needs. Attends continuing education programs in order to maintain licensure. Attends hospital sponsored training programs as required by the department. Completes all mandatory requirements, certifications, and licensure within allotted timeframe for completion (CPR, License, PPD)
  • Organizational knowledge: Works effectively within and between departments. Participates on inter-departmental teams and committees, communicating unit knowledge as appropriate. Provides department/unit with information and knowledge acquired during participation with interdepartmental teams and committees. Demonstrates a constructive approach during all interactions with staff, supervisors, and managers both inside and outside the unit.
