Position Overview



The Assistant General Manager is primarily responsible for managing day-to-day operations of Sorrel River Ranch in Moab, Utah. This individual must behave as a leader within the Sorrel River Ranch hospitality team and encourage and support all coworkers to deliver the Sorrel River Ranch product to the highest possible standard every day; act as a unifying force; share product innovations and structure with teammates in a clear manner to streamline and improve operations; remain open to all possibilities proposed for Sorrel River Ranch operations and help to understand their viability, operability, and sustainability; work to understand the cultural differences that enhance the guest experience and add depth to the Sorrel River Ranch work environment, and work to further the Sorrel River Ranch product by questioning operational norms, proposing solutions, and striving to innovate and streamline the Sorrel River Ranch operation.

Operational Leadership & Oversigh

Oversee daily operations across Front Office, Housekeeping, Activities/Ranch Programming, F&B, Guest Services, and Spa/Wellness (if applicable). Ensure operational consistency, cleanliness, safety, and service excellence throughout all buildings, rooms, grounds, and ranch facilities. Collaborate with department heads to maintain SOPs, ensuring compliance with company standards, legal regulations, and ranch-specific safety protocols. Monitor the guest arrival, orientation, and departure process to ensure seamless, luxury-level experiences. Coordinate with maintenance/facilities on preventative maintenance and rapid response to operational issues.

Guest Experience & Service Standards

Serve as a visible, engaged leader in guest-facing areas, building rapport and addressing needs in real time. Resolve complex guest concerns with tact, empathy, and professionalism to ensure satisfaction and retention. Maintain a culture of hospitality excellence tailored to the ranch environment--authentic, warm, attentive, and detail-oriented. Partner with activities/ranch staff to ensure programming (horseback riding, trail experiences, outdoor excursions, farm/animal programs) meets safety and luxury-service expectations.

Staff Leadership & Human Resources Support

Oversee recruitment, onboarding, training, scheduling, and performance management for resort staff and seasonal teams. Lead and mentor department managers, ensuring cohesive cross-departmental communication and teamwork. Foster a positive work environment emphasizing safety, professionalism, hospitality, and ranch values. Support staff housing management (if applicable), ensuring community standards and property care.

Financial & Administrative Management

Assist with budgeting, forecasting, labor planning, and cost control. Review daily reports (occupancy, ADR, revenue summaries, activity bookings, F&B sales, labor statistics). Monitor inventory ordering and cost efficiency across all departments (housekeeping supplies, ranch equipment, F&B, retail, activities gear). Support strategic planning to maximize revenue opportunities, including packages, seasonal promotions, and guest experience enhancements.

Safety, Risk Management & Regulatory Compliance

Ensure compliance with hospitality regulations, ranch safety standards, environmental requirements, and animal-handling protocols (where applicable). Conduct regular property and facility inspections for safety, cleanliness, and hazard prevention. Oversee emergency procedures, staff training, and safety drills (wildlife, trail safety, weather emergencies, medical response, etc.).

Guest Activities & Ranch Programming Coordination

Work with Front Desk Manager to maintain high-quality outdoor programming. Ensure all activities operate safely, on schedule, and with exceptional guest engagement. Assist with special events, private group itineraries, weddings, and seasonal celebrations.

Quality Assurance & Long-Term Improvement

Analyze guest feedback (online reviews, post-stay surveys, on-site commentary) to identify improvement areas. Conduct regular operational audits to ensure standards are met in service, grooming, room quality, and facility readiness. Work closely with Ownership & Corporate Office to continuously improve systems, amenities, and guest offerings


Qualifications

Required

3-5+ years of leadership experience in luxury hospitality (resort, boutique hotel, or high-end ranch/lodge preferred). Strong understanding of guest service, front office operations, housekeeping, and F&B fundamentals. Experience managing cross-functional teams. Excellent communication, conflict resolution, and guest-relations skills. Ability to live/work in a remote or rural environment (if applicable).

Preferred

Experience with outdoor recreation programming, ranch operations, or adventure-focused hospitality. Knowledge of equine programs, trail safety, or outdoor guiding is a plus (not required). Familiarity with PMS/POS systems common to boutique/luxury properties. Experience with staff housing management and seasonal workforce planning.

Physical & Environmental Requirements

Ability to walk the property, including uneven ground, trails, barns, and outdoor facilities. Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions. Ability to lift up to 30 lbs occasionally (supplies, equipment).

Work Schedule

Full-time with variable schedule based on seasonality. Regular weekend/holiday coverage expected.
