Overview

The Environmental Section at the Agency of Transportation (AOT) is seeking a cultural resources professional to provide historic preservation and archaeological review for AOT projects and programs. The ideal candidate will be 36 CFR Qualified.

The AOT Historic Preservation Specialist will perform technical and administrative work, involving identification and documentation of historic and archaeological resources that may be affected by proposed Agency construction or maintenance projects. Responsibilities involve project consultation and coordination with AOT engineers, the Division of Historic Preservation, FHWA, and various local officials. The position will work on resource identification, impact effect determinations, and development of related documents, reports, and permits, and review of consultant generated projects and submitted reports. Work is performed under the general direction of the AOT Historic Preservation and Archaeology Officers.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Reviews Transportation design plans to determine any effects on historic and archaeological resources under applicable state and federal legislation, including Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act, Section 4(f) of the Department of Transportation Act, and 22 VSA 14, Vermont\'s Historic Preservation Act.
  • Visits proposed construction or maintenance sites to assess the suitability of historic and archaeological resources for inclusion in the National Register.
  • Proposes recommended changes to project designs to ensure compliance with the Secretary of the Interior\'s Standards for Rehabilitation.
  • Reviews consultant reports for compliance with contracts and state and federal cultural resource legislation.
  • Visits job sites to ensure conformance with agreements.
  • Prepares permit documents and portions of consultant contracts.
  • Performs related duties as required.
This position is a combination of office and field work, with the possibility of remote work.

This is a Limited Service position, which is non-tenured and authorized through 09/30/2026. Limited Service positions are established for specially funded projects or programs.

Environmental Factors

Work is performed in both office and field settings, and private means of transportation may be required. Work outside of the normal work schedule and out of the state may be required. Some historical resources may be located in remote areas that are difficult to access. Outdoor work is performed throughout the year, leading to exposure to all types of weather. Adversarial situations may be encountered in the normal course of duties.

Minimum Qualifications

Master\'s degree in historic preservation, archeology, or architectural history.

Preferred Qualifications

Two (2) years or more of professional experience in historic preservation, archeology, or architectural history.

Working knowledge of transportation planning and design principles and practices.
