GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK:
Berkeley County Animal Control responds to and follows-up on animal related complaints. This agency investigates all complaints of cruel or inhumane treatment of animals within the county and sees that the law relating to the prevention of cruelty to animals is enforced. Animal Control also captures and impounds unlicensed, sick, stray and injured animals in Berkeley County. As an Animal Control Officer the candidate will be carrying out the duties required by this agency. This position is on a rotating shift and may be required to work nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES:
Enforce local ordinances and state laws as they pertain to animal control.
Assist in the maintenance and upkeep of animal control equipment, vehicles and facilities.
Maintain records for the animal shelter and animals housed there; logs all animal control incidents.
Follow established animal control policies and procedures.
Positively promotes the activities of the Animal Control Department to civic groups, social organizations, etc.
Report both oral and written updates on animal control activities.
Work cooperatively with other municipalities in animal control related areas
Participate, as required, in training programs for county animal control personnel.
Maintain firearms proficiency as required.
Develop and deliver, as necessary, appropriate public education information.
Work regularly with the Court on the preparation of case materials.
Perform all of duties as required.
SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABLITIIES:
Ability to retain knowledge of local, state and federal laws and regulations relating to animal control.
Knowledge of the principles of animal control management and operations.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other agencies.
Excellent oral and written communications skills.
Ability to remain calm in stressful situations.
Basic computer and data processing skills.
Comparable training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be able to stand, walk, climb, carry, bend, kneel, crawl, lift, reach, push and pull.
Exertion of up to 25 pounds of force occasionally
Employees will be subject to the normal hazards associated with working around dogs, cats and other domestic and wild animals.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possess a valid driver's license
Ability to obtain firearms certification.
Applicants must complete NACA Levels I, II and III and Animal Cruelty Investigation Levels, I, II, and III training.
