Purpose of Announcement EXAMINATION IS ANNOUNCED TO SUPPLEMENT THE EXISTING EMPLOYMENT LIST TO FILL ONE (1) CURRENT WEST JEFFERSON VACANCY IN THE DEPARTMENT OF ANIMAL SHELTER AND FUTURE VACACNIES AS THEY OCCUR. Kind of Work The purpose of this position is to observe and evaluate animals for signs of illness and report symptoms to appropriate Personnel. Employee performs various duties related to the care of shelter animals, including cleaning of holding areas, assuring the animals receive food, water and provide humane handling when an animal is moved. Administers vaccines and micro-chip under the supervision of the veterinarians, assist customers who are seeking lost pets, and those interested in adopting. Performs related work as required. This position requires rotating shift work, which includes weekends and holidays. This position is also an essential, emergency duty status worker and may not be relieved of duty when the Parish President or his designee recommends a voluntary or mandatory evacuation of Jefferson Parish. Position requires driving of a Parish vehicle, thus possession of a valid driver\'s license and acceptable driving record will be given preference.
Animal Care Attendant I level employees must have the ability to obtain, during their course of employment, a Certified Animal Euthanasia Technician (CAET) certification issued by the Louisiana Board of Veterinary Medicine. JEFFERSON PARISH CIVIL SERVICE BENEFITS
Vacation (Annual Leave) Employees accumulate one half day of paid vacation for every two weeks worked. Leave accrual rates increase with years of service. Any unused annual leave is usually paid upon separation from Parish Employment.
Sick Leave Employees accumulate one half day of paid sick leave for every two weeks worked. Sick leave is available for personal illness, injury or medical consultations.
Holidays Nine paid official holidays are observed, plus any holidays declared by Parish Officials.
Life Insurance All regular employees receive a life insurance policy equal to one year\'s salary. Extra insurance may be purchased.
Medical Insurance An HMO medical insurance plan is avalable for employees and their dependents. Jefferson Parish pays 80% of the premium for employees and 50% of the premiums for dependents.

Retirement Most regular employees belong to the Parochial Employees\' Retirement System instead of the Social Security System. For employees hired after January 01, 2007, a pension calculated at 3% of salary per year of service is provided upon retirement at age 67 with 7 years of service, age 62 with 10 years of service, or age 55 with 30 years of service.
Tenure Payment Employees are paid $25 per year of service in December of each year. Employees must have worked two years before the first check is paid.
Deferred Compensation Plan(457b plan) Similar to 401K programs, the 457b Deferred Plan allows employees to defer up to $14,000 of pretax income each year to supplement retirement savings. Special leaves of absence for military service, maternity leave, etc. may be granted in accordance with the Personnel Rules.
