The University of Louisiana at Lafayette New Iberia Research Center specializes in the breeding, management, and importation of a diverse range of nonhuman primate species and offers a broad range of diagnostic, laboratory, and human resources for the development and characterization of nonhuman primate models for applied and basic research aimed at promoting human quality of life.
We're looking for a
Laboratory Technical Assistant (Animal Care Assistant)
CPG Levels 1-3 to join our Facilities Management Department. The Animal Care Assistant provides essential support in a laboratory or research setting by performing a range of technical, maintenance, and clerical duties.

Job Duties:
As you progress through levels, responsibilities will expand based on experience and performance. In this role, you will:
Assist in the preparation, setup, and cleanup of laboratory equipment, tools, and materials.
Performs basic laboratory tests and procedures under supervision.
Collect, record, and report laboratory data accurately.
Clean, sanitize, and maintain animal cages and housing areas to ensure proper care and welfare.
Feed, monitor, and observe animals, reporting any signs of illness or abnormal behavior.
Handle and dispose of laboratory specimens and materials in accordance with safety guidelines.
Maintain cleanliness and organization of the laboratory environment.
Manage lab inventory and supplies, including ordering and restocking as needed.
Support faculty, researchers, or students during experiments or instructional activities.
Operate lab equipment with increasing independence as proficiency develops.
The incumbent will be performing animal care duties. Applicants who have a fear of large animals need not apply. Preferred applicants will be capable of the following:
Ability to lift 50 lbs.
Stand for long periods
Climb ladders & stairs
Work with arms above the head for periods of 5-10 minutes
Perform basic sanitation practices-mopping, scrubbing, pressure washing
Ability to withstand extreme temperatures
Operate motor vehicle
Distinguish colors
Follow oral and written instructions
Understand Standard Operating Procedures and follow them
Have tolerance to animal hair and dander
Write legibly

This position has a minimum Special Entrance Rate (SER) of $12.00/hour.
