Job Title: Aquatic Invasive Species Interdiction Specialist



Location: Cedar City and St. George Utah (Southern Region)

The lead biologist for the Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) interdiction program will implement the Utah Department of Natural Resource's (UDNR) Quagga Mussel Action Plan within an assigned region. The main goal is to prevent quagga and zebra mussels from becoming established in Utah and to contain existing aquatic invasive species to their current locations. This action plan primarily focuses on outreach and interdiction, which involves identifying and decontaminating suspect boats and other water-related recreational equipment. The incumbent will coordinate all program duties, supervise multiple seasonal wildlife technicians, and work closely with law enforcement and other biologists.

Responsibilities

Supervise, train, and assist a team of wildlife technicians, and coordinate with contracted partners to identify and decontaminate watercraft & associated equipment that may contain aquatic invasive species. Conduct interviews for and hire seasonal employees. Develop and implement statewide aquatic invasive species outreach, interdiction, and decontamination strategies. Work with local, state, and national partner agencies. Assist with other statewide aquatics projects asassigned by immediate supervisor (e.g.,gillnetting,electrofishing, etc.) Attend assigned meetings with coordination/management groups regarding AIS interdiction. Attend various training sessions and meetings to improve skills, coordinate work, and communicate key findings with other individuals and agencies. Maintenance of facilities and equipment; perform other duties as assigned by immediate supervisor. Provide required training for seasonal employees, assigned contractors, and allied agencies.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:





Valid driver's license. Experience with AIS, specifically quagga mussels. Supervisory skills.

Preferred Qualifications:



Bachelor's degree in a closely related field, or an unrelated degree with at least 5 years of experience. The ideal candidate will possess a bachelor's degree or higher. The ideal candidate will possess experience working with quagga mussel or other aquatic invasive species issues. The ideal candidate will be willing to travel when needed. The ideal candidate will be WID 1, 2, and 3 trained, or be willing to acquire training. The ideal candidate will possess supervisory experience and good organizational skills. The ideal candidate will possess previous managerial experience in the public or private sector.

May require the ability to stand; walk over rough surfaces; bend, crouch, stoop, stretch, reach, lift moderately heavy items (up to 50 lbs.) in a recurring manner and/or for long periods of time.
