Job Summary:
The After School Tutor/Bus Driver position requires individuals interested in impacting the lives of students through academic, enrichment, and social and emotional support activities. Each After School Tutor will engage in small group tutoring sessions in the after-school hours and through enrichment activities both on and off site. The Bus Driver is responsible for safely transporting students to and from REC programming, ensuring timely pick-up and drop-off while maintaining a positive and supportive environment. This role plays a critical part in creating a safe, reliable, and welcoming experience for students and families. Drivers must adhere to all traffic laws and transportation safety guidelines, conduct regular vehicle inspections, and communicate effectively with staff, students, and caregivers.
Physical demands associated with this position may include: sitting, standing, walking, alternative sitting or standing at will, lifting or carrying up to 25lbs, pushing/pulling, stooping, crouching, kneeling, crawling, and or climbing.
Bus Driver Responsibilities (Training Provided)
Safely operate a school bus to transport students to and from REC programming locations
Maintain a timely schedule for pick-up and drop-off, following designated routes
Conduct pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections to ensure safety and report any issues promptly
Monitor student behavior on the bus to ensure a safe and respectful environment
Follow all traffic laws, safety regulations, and organizational policies
Maintain a clean motor vehicle record
Communicate effectively with REC staff, program supervisors, and parents/guardians as needed
Assist students with boarding and exiting the bus when necessary
Keep the bus clean and organized to maintain a welcoming and safe environment
Respond calmly and appropriately to emergencies or unexpected situations
Complete and submit required logs, reports, or incident documentation accurately and on time
Programming/Tutoring Responsibilities:
Assist students during program time with homework and structured academic support
Assist with selection and preparation of academic support materials for students.
Engage with students to mentor and develop a positive relationship
Supervise and engage with students during recess time
Arrange materials in rooms to meet the needs of the students, staff, and volunteers
Assist with set up of programming space prior to programming and cleaning up programming space at the end of each programming day following the vendor usage guidelines required by D51
Be an active participant in the Positive Behavior Support (PBS) policy
Serve as a positive role model to students
Participate in enrichment programming activities with students in a variety of capacities on campus and in the community
Attend REC program site weekly staff meetings
Complete training hours provided by REC
Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
Must be 20 years or older (19 if have a CDL) with at least two years driving experience (driving requirement)
Ability to safety operate a small bus (no CDL required)
Strong academic knowledge base
Leadership skills a must
Ability to interact with people of all ages and cultural backgrounds
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Effective oral and written communication skills
Strong ability to multitask
Prefer an individual who has experience working with assisting youth overcome barriers
True desire to impact the lives of children in our community
Bilingual skills beneficial, but not mandatory
Capable of being flexible when needed
Programming Hours:
10-16 hours per week
Most (early release day) + occasional 3-4 additional hours/month (weekends or when kids are off school-to be scheduled in advance) Pear Park Elementary runs Tue-Thur 3:20-6:15 pm & Fri 1:30-6:15 pm

Position Details:
Limited Part-time position during the school year (10-16 hours per week). Follows the school year (two, 14-week semesters) and an optional two-four week summer program
$16-$18.00/hr. (based on experience)
$18-$20/hr (Senior Level Tutor)
+$0.25-$0.50/hr driving differential (only for trained activity bus drivers)
+ $1.00/hr bilingual differential (only for tutors bilingual in English & Spanish)
