The Alabama School of Math and Science

seeks an

adjunct Math Instructor

to teach one class each term, starting with second term this year and continuing for a total of three classes per year (ASMS is on an 11-week trimester system). Classes include but are not limited to, Honors Algebra I and II. The adjunct will teach highly motivated high school students in an advanced college prep program. Adjunct salary is $2,200.00 per class. Master's degree or Ph.D. and teaching experience required.

Summary

: The Adjunct Instructor will provide subject-specific instruction on a part-time basis, supporting ASMS academic mission while fostering a positive and engaging learning environment. This role is ideal for individuals with professional expertise and/or teaching experience who wish to contribute to the academic growth and success of high school students. Position includes developing lesson plans that align with College Board standards, delivering engaging instruction, assessing student process, and preparing students for the AP examination. The instructor will foster critical thinking and ensure a supportive, inclusive learning environment that upholds ASMS academic standards.

Master's degree in related field (or equivalent experience). Teaching experience, preferably with AP or college-level coursework. Strong knowledge of curriculum and College Board requirements. Commitment to student
academic success and engagement.

Essential Functions

:

Instructors must develop and implement a program of instruction to meet the needs of a learning community. Instructors are required to develop and implement a program of instruction that is consistent with state guidelines but is attentive to the needs of academically talented students. In order to provide a conducive learning environment, instructors must possess classroom management skills and be able to manage students outside of the classroom setting in the larger school community and during periods of travel such as field trips. Instructors have the responsibility of continually assessing student performance and providing timely feedback to students in the form of test scores, written evaluations of work, and personal conferences. Instructors must continually work with other school personnel to monitor the academic performance and the general well-being of students. Instructors are expected to actively collaborate with other faculty members for purposes of curriculum ideas, teaching approaches, and problem-solving. Instructors are required to maintain student records and retain samples of written work for purposes of documenting student progress and abilities. Instructors must actively work with the school librarian to provide support services, which may include suggesting supplementary reading materials as well as audio-video offerings for the purpose of enhancing learning in the classroom. In order to
assist in the documentation of student progress, instructors must efficiently maintain and submit appropriate records and reports.
It is required for instructors to prepare and distribute a course syllabus for each course taught, developed in accordance with organizational guidelines. Instructors must maintain confidentiality of student records. Instructors are expected to actively investigate outside learning resources such as guest speakers and student visits to special exhibits, museums, collections, etc. for the purpose of enhancing learning in the field of study. Instructors must ensure that the classroom is attractive, functional, and conducive to learning. Instructors must have the ability to work as a member of a team and to be involved in extracurricular activities for the common good of the faculty, staff, and the student body as well as the school community as a whole. Instructors are required to participate in professional growth and development activities including faculty meetings, in-service days, and other activities as required or assigned. Instructors must possess strong knowledge of content, curriculum, instructional methods, materials and equipment and must constantly reassess to keep current with new developments in their field of study and in secondary and higher education as a whole. Instructors are expected to be organized and prepared for classroom instruction. Instructors must have the ability to be flexible and adapt to changing instructional needs. It is required for instructors to be skilled and effective in oral and written communication. Instructors must be able to communicate with a diverse population. It is essential that instructors have a willingness to handle academically challenged students and the ability to communicate with parents and staff to achieve the best possible results. Instructors are expected to create an interactive classroom environment in which students are encouraged to participate fully by asking questions and contributing to topical discussion. Instructors should provide instruction in academic research via electronic sources such as the internet or web and must provide guidance in writing papers. Instructors who teach a lab must instruct students on lab safety and post nationally accepted safety standards when necessary. For certain science classes, such as chemistry, instructors must have the capacity to use appropriate masks and filters or protective clothing as a means of protection from harmful liquids or fumes. Instructors should challenge students to explore their interests and provide incentive to those who want to learn more on their own by methods such as giving reading lists, suggesting films, providing information on special events, programs and other appropriate venues. Instructors are required to take attendance in accordance with organizational guidelines and follow up with tardiness and absenteeism by meeting with the student as needed. Instructors must maintain a professional attitude and in general, help to promote a positive image of ASMS to the outside community. Instructors should be willing to put in extra time as needed to see that students have the best instruction, the best texts, and adequate access to the resources that they need to be successful. It is expected that instructors will write letters of recommendation for students as well as perform other professional activities when necessary. Instructors are required to actively participate in a program of faculty mentoring. Instructors must implement the policies and procedures of the Alabama School of Mathematics and Science. Instructors are expected to maintain a neat appearance and appropriate dress. * Instructors must enforce and comply with the policies and procedures of the ASMS Board of Directors.
