Definition



The Academic Vocational Coach plays a crucial role in providing academic instruction and support to students enrolled in our Washoe YouthBuild and other non-traditional workforce development and education programs. This unique position allows the coach to facilitate classroom lessons with students using a tailored approach that is aimed at meeting the students where they are and empowering them to reach their educational goals. Along with coaching these young adults through entry level vocational studies. Washoe YouthBuild (WYB) is a job training program that focuses on empowering economically disadvantaged youth and young adults who have dropped out or are at risk of dropping out of high school. Through education, vocational training, and community service, students are provided the opportunity to re-write their future and achieve gainful employment in high demand fields. In this role, you will create a positive and supportive learning environment to help students develop the skills they need to successfully obtain their High School Equivalence (HSE) diploma. For students who desire to complete their high school diploma through Redfield Academy (RA), you will be responsible for facilitating direct instruction and guidance to students based on their individual needs. The Academic Vocational Coach establishes an equitable educational atmosphere for all students that provides them the opportunity to reach their intellectual, emotional, physical and psychological goals. This role will be housed in office, as well as in the community when applicable.

Duties


Implements instructional activities that contribute to a climate where students are actively engaged in meaningful learning experiences. These activities include direct and on-line instruction. Develops and adapts curriculum materials, lesson plans, and educational resources that align with the programs' objectives and the unique needs of the students. Ensure that the curriculum is engaging, inclusive, and relevant, and promotes critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Delivers high-quality and interactive academic instruction to students in subjects such as math, science, English language arts, social studies, and other relevant subjects. Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse learning styles and abilities of each student. Encourages and inspires students to set and achieve academic goals. Provide guidance and mentorship to help students overcome obstacles and develop a sense of self-confidence and independence. Collaborate with students' Case Managers to minimize barriers to education achievement. Provides individualized support and tutoring to students who require additional assistance in specific subjects or skills. Monitor students' academic progress and implement interventions as needed to help them stay on track. Regularly assesses student learning and progress using a variety of methods, such as quizzes, tests, projects, and presentations. Use assessment data to identify areas for improvement and adjust instructional strategies accordingly. Works collaboratively with the Program Coordinator, Case Managers and others involved in the youths' educational journey to implement the students' Academic Personal Plan (APP) Engages in program activities, including community service projects, to build a strong sense of community and social responsibility among students. Fosters a positive, respectful and fair classroom environment that encourages active participation and collaboration among students. Enforce consistent rules and guidelines to maintain a safe and productive learning atmosphere. Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with students, parents, and other professionals on a regular basis. Collaborate with other YouthBuild staff, such as vocational trainers, career counselors, and Case Managers, to ensure a holistic approach to student success and development. Models professional and ethical standards when dealing with students, parents, peers, and the community. Ensures that student growth and achievement is continuous and appropriate for age group, subject area, and/or program classification. Establishes and maintains cooperative working relationships with students, parents, and schools, as measured by The Children's Cabinet and Washoe County School District. Participates in training and presentations about promising practices pertaining to teaching disadvantaged youth in alternative educational settings. Attend workshops, training sessions, and conferences to enhance your skills and knowledge. Meets professional obligations through efficient work habits such as meeting deadlines, honoring schedules, coordinating and continuous staff development. Embody the core mission, strategic focus and overall goals and objectives of the Children's Cabinet. Maintains effective and efficient record keeping procedures. Perform other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications


Knowledge of


The Nevada High School Equivalency (HSE) Examination requirements. Challenges and barriers experienced by disadvantaged youth and their families. Justice, diversity, equity and inclusion as it pertains to the education system. Youth empowerment strategies and techniques.


Ability to


Keep appointments punctually, be organized and demonstrate follow through. Learn new ideas and skills by reading and with hands-on training. Express ideas clearly and concisely both orally and in writing. Work with adults and youth of diverse backgrounds and beliefs. Problem solve in stressful situations


Special Requirements


Bachelor's degree or higher preferred, but an AA with experience in the field to qualify as a substitute teacher may apply Current Nevada Teacher License or current substitute-teaching license, preferred but not required Math and Science emphasis will be given special consideration Bilingual in Spanish is preferred. Must have reliable vehicle for work and possess a valid Nevada Driver's License and proof of insurance. This is a part-time, multi-track, year-round position
