ISP Fingerprint Technician, Trainee


Summary:


The Idaho State Police Bureau of Criminal Identification Unit is looking for a highly specialized professional to learn techniques of fingerprint analysis, classification, technical fingerprint identifications, and criminal records work consisting of classifying, and comparing biometrics of unknown and known persons, crime suspects according to accepted scientific methods. They also perform related work.


The successful applicant may be reclassified to a Fingerprint Technician after completion of a training period and successful completion of probation (approximately six months), and pay will be adjusted to $20.28 per hour. They will also be required to obtain International Association for Identification (IAI) Tenprint Fingerprint Certification within three (3) years of being selected/promoted for the position of Fingerprint Technician (if not currently certified).

Examples of Duties


1. Fingerprint identification.



Typical duties: In a training capacity: classifies simple to routine fingerprints through detailed and systematic analysis using the Henry and National Crime Information Center classification systems; searches and compares prints on file for matching purposes with unidentified prints; uses established methods during identification of prints to ensure accuracy is maintained and evidence preserved; operates a biometric workstation to conduct quality control and visual verification of Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS) searches (ABIS is a comprehensive, fully-integrated computer based system used for capture and input of biometric images for comparisons to assist in the identification of criminals and to solve crimes).



2. Clerical.


Typical duties: maintains biometric files, data entry, perform complex and precise identification of submitted biometrics to examine, classify, identify, and compare utilizing accepted scientific methods and practices.


Minimum Qualifications



Good knowledge of general office practices and familiarity with computer systems and databases.

Typically gained by a bachelor's degree or higher in a related field OR at least two college courses in a related subject area AND at least 2-years or applicable work experience in a related field. A combination of coursework and experience that represents good knowledge may also be considered.

Experience:


Minimum requirement is typically met by 1 year of work-related experience for all the following.

Entering and retrieving data using a computerized record system. Monitoring a records system to identify and correct errors. Researching a variety of sources to solve problems. Interpreting, explaining, and applying regulations, laws, or complex policies to carry out assignments. Working with sensitive or restricted data


Incumbents train to perform progressively more difficult assignments to learn the basic elements, methods, and procedures involved in the classification, identification, and systematic filing of fingerprints.


It is essential that the incumbents have the following:

Visual acuity sufficient to perceive minute differences in fingerprint impressions. Stamina to work with minute visual detail for up to seven hours per day.
