Employment Term Day to Day Basis, as needed

POSITION:

SCHOOL NURSE





IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR:

Principal and Director of Curriculum and Instruction



FLSA/CONTRACT STATUS:

Exempt



EMPLOYMENT TERM:

Minimum 210 days annually, pursuant to WV Code 18-5-45; extended employment terms may be established by the Mineral County Board of Education.



SALARY:

Pursuant to WV Code 18A-4-2, in accordance with Mineral County Teacher Salary Schedule, commensurate with experience and education level.



EVALUATION:

Performance in this position will be evaluated by the building principal/immediate supervisor and in accordance with WV State Code 18A-2-12, WV State Board Policy 5310 and Mineral County Board of Education Evaluation Policy.



JOB SUMMARY:

Assists in providing the fullest possible educational opportunity for students by minimizing absence due to illness and creating a climate of health and well-being in the schools.



PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:


+ Provides leadership in promoting health and safety;
+ Provides quality health care to students on a daily basis, including medication administration and other health concerns, but not limited to seizures, diabetes and asthma, including first aid to injured students and staff;
+ Works to reduce absenteeism and support student learning and educational success by providing health care assessment, intervention and follow-up for all students within the school setting;
+ Counsels students, parents and school staff concerning preventive care and health problems and makes referral as needed;
+ Develops, assists and monitors individual student health care plans within the school setting and review plans with administration and appropriate staff;
+ Implements individual health care plans as approved by the student's home physician;
+ Provides staff training/updates for medication administration and other health concerns as required for student needs;
+ Implements new health services programs;
+ Reviews and evaluates immunization records for state compliance;
+ Performs and maintains accurate reporting and recording system for continuity and accountability of student health information/screening activities as required by state/county policies;
+ Maintains daily log of student visits to the clinic;
+ Assists with Pre K/Head Start, Kindergarten registration, new student enrollment and explain state health requirements to parents;
+ Communicates regularly with administration, health services coordinator, school counselor, teachers, parents, food services, and other staff regarding health services issues;
+ Implements School Board policy on exclusion and readmission of students in connection with infectious and contagious diseases and infested conditions;
+ Serves as a resource person for the classroom on health care topics;
+ Participates in assessment and reporting of suspected child abuse;
+ Utilizes community health care resources;
+ Ensures compliance to Federal, State, and local health related guidelines and regulations.
+ Establishes good public and employee relations;
+ Models behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible;
+ Maintains and upgrades professional work habits and skills to improve health programs;
+ Participates in staff meetings and in staff development at the building and school division levels;
+ Demonstrates competency in knowledge and implementation of technology standards; and
+ Adheres to Employee Code of Conduct as outlined in Mineral County School's Policy 3210; and
+ Performs other duties deemed appropriate and assigned by the Superintendent and/or immediate supervisor(s).




QUALIFICATIONS:


+ Registered Professional Nurse;
+ West Virginia Authorization as School Nurse; and
+ Criminal background check conducted pursuant to WV Code 18-5-15c and/or 18A-3-10, as appropriate.
