The City of Ankeny is seeking college students or recent college graduates to fill our paid, temporary full-time 2026 Summer Engineering Internship Program. This is an opportunity to be fully immersed in the day-to-day activities and gain experience in one of our Engineering Divisions listed below.



Two internship positions accepting applications:

Civil Construction Engineering

- Public Works Engineering Division

Traffic Engineering

- Public Works Traffic Engineering Division


The compensation rate is $19.00 per hour, 40 hours per week for 13 weeks, beginning mid-May and ending in mid-August. Pre-employment drug screen and background check are required.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Civil Construction Engineering

:

Assists with construction observation on Capital Improvement Program (CIP) projects including street, utility, and sidewalk infrastructure. Collects field measurements and construction quantities and performs engineering calculations. Prepares and tests samples of construction materials and documents field observations. Performs other related duties as needed

Traffic Engineering

:Performs traffic studies including vehicle counts & speeds, pedestrian counts, gap studies, and high-resolution data analysis. Performs data collection using Global Positions System (GPS) equipment. Assist Technicians with preventative maintenance and repairs of traffic signals and signs. Performs other related duties as needed.

Entry Requirements and Skills

All applicants who are pursuing an associate or bachelor's degree and recent college graduates will be considered; however, preference will be given to students majoring in Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, Construction Engineering, or a related field who have completed their freshman year or higher.



Knowledge of office software (Word, Excel, etc.) and capable of working with engineering software such as AutoCAD, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and other engineering automation tools is a plus.

REQUIRED SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

Must be at least 18 years old. Shall possess and maintain a valid motor vehicle operator's license.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

Works in office environment. Works in field environment. Climbs and walks over uneven terrain. * Performs outside work in all kinds of weather conditions.
