The Patrol Sergeant is responsible for assigning work and being an informational resource for deputies in the field, and managing large public safety scenes. Responsibilities may include scheduling personnel; providing guidance and reviewing staff daily work; reviewing reports; ensuring compliance with policies, and procedures and laws.





Job Responsibilities



ESSENTIAL DUTIES:




Prioritizes and assigns work for patrol deputies; provides coaching, direction and assistance to staff in performing duties; ensures staff is trained; ensures that employees follow regulations, policies, and procedures; maintains a healthy and safe working environment; responsible for scheduling and authorizes overtime; makes hiring, termination, and disciplinary recommendations; and may issue reprimands and suspensions for staff.


Reviews documentation prepared and maintained by staff and ensures informational accuracy, completeness and compliance with applicable statutes, regulations, policies, and procedures.


Coordinates with the public, vendors, and other internal and external staff, departments, and/or agencies to prepare and present educational programs regarding laws, rules, regulations, and safety; establish and maintain community partnerships; order supplies; assist with planning departmental operations; and/or facilitate related departmental operations.


Oversees the maintenance and inventory of office vehicles and equipment; authorizes and purchases new or replacement equipment as needed; authorizes the maintenance and repair of vehicles.


Performs duties of Deputy Sheriff and Detective when necessary or as assigned.


May assume supervisory responsibility for the entire Sheriff's Office operations on a temporary basis in the absence of or when assigned by the Chief Deputy or Sheriff; has authority to represent management at step one of a contractually established grievance procedure.


Performs other duties of a similar nature or level as assigned or as it becomes apparent in carrying out other responsibilities.





Education and/or Experience



TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:




Associate's degree or two-year technical certificate in Law Enforcement or related field.


Must have two years of law enforcement related supervision experience or five years full-time general law enforcement experience.



LICENSING REQUIREMENTS:




Active Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) License (or ability to activate upon hire); Valid MN Class D driver's license; Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) certification preferred.


KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS:



Supervisory principles; Principles and practices of patrol and crime prevention; Law enforcement weapons and equipment; Applicable Federal, State, and local laws, rules, and regulations; Applicable statutory and case law governing federal, state, civil and criminal procedures regarding rules of evidence, search and seizure, arrest, constitutional law, court procedures and civil rights; County geography and addressing system; Safety principles and practices; Defensive techniques; Report preparation techniques; Physical apprehension, handcuffing, and restraining techniques; Educational programming principles and practices; Legal operation of motor vehicles; Computer operation and related software applications; Customer service principles; Specialized equipment relevant to area of assignment; Modern office technology.


SKILL REQUIREMENTS:



Assigning and prioritizing work; Applying law enforcement principles and practices; Utilizing a variety of law enforcement weapons and equipment competently, logically and safely; Applying applicable Federal, State, and local laws, rules, and regulations in a fair and impartial manner; Maintaining records and preparing reports; Compilation and analysis of facts and evidence to make valid civil and criminal recommendations; Providing customer service; Presenting and attending training sessions regarding public safety, legal principles, procedures, operations, investigative techniques and enforcement; Interpreting and applying applicable laws, codes, regulations and standards; Utilizing a computer and relevant software applications; Utilizing communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisors, the general public and others to sufficiently and accurately exchange or convey information and to receive work direction. Exercise rational judgement; Lawfully and competently possess a firearm; Provide credible and truthful testimony; Deal with situations and people effectively and professionally in stressful situations; Work independently of direct supervision; Perform assigned duties and tasks in a effective, efficient and safe manner.




PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:



Positions in this class typically require: climbing, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.


Medium Work:

Exerting up to 75 pounds of force occasionally including rare occasion of up to 200 pounds with assistance of co-workers, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.


Incumbents may be exposed to hazardous materials, such as chemicals, blood, and other bodily fluids; extreme temperatures; and other adverse environmental conditions, such as, challenging behaviors, imminent danger, and threatening environments; incumbents may also be expected to travel to external locations/organizations.


Must maintain good physical, mental and emotional fitness.

GRADE LEVEL: UC44




SALARY RANGE: $78,769.60-$105,934.40 annually
